On August 17 & 18, Sandbox Startups’ Makers Lab hosted their 24-hour Hackathon at the new Incubation Center in Hubballi. The event titled ALEXATHON, engaged participants in voice application through an 8-hour workshop led by Alexa developer & evangelist at Amazon Sohan Maheshwar, followed by a 16-hour Hackathon – which challenged teams to create their own voice modules inspired by Amazon Alexa.
The Sandbox Startups team welcomed more than 250 eager participants made up of students, developers, and professionals across India. The energy exuded from the participants truly set the tone for the rest of the weekend. Our honored guests – Rajiv Prakash, director and board member of Sandbox Startups and founder, NEXT IN – Growth Partners to Entrepreneur; Sohan Maheshwar; Darshan Kasaravalli, CEO of Valida Testing Solutions Pvt Ltd; and C.M. Patil, CEO, Sandbox Startups – urged our participants to step outside of their comfort zones and push the boundaries of their creative capacities to create context-specific, innovative, accessible, and user-friendly solutions that could extend outside of the highly-specialized Hackathon environment.
After 16 hours of hard work, the judges had a difficult decision to make in choosing our Hackathon winners. The winning teams of the event were Shaurya, a group of professionals from AquaSafi, TheVoice, the IIIT Dharwad students, and SRV, a team of 9th standard students from a village of Gadag district and previous Sandbox Developthon third place winners.
The overall success of the Makers Lab ALEXATHON event not only proves the sheer amount of technical talent, ingenuity, and entrepreneurial spirit is present within the Hubballi-Dharwad region and beyond, but also emphasizes the importance of fostering a community of makers based on collaboration and communication. With future Hackathon events, Sandbox Startups’ Makers Lab looks to strengthen as well as continue to expand the community of makers and developers.
